Social Enterprise - Local Examples

MentalCare Connect Co. Ltd.

(Sponsored by the “Enhancing Employment of People with Disabilities through Small Enterprise” Project of the Social Welfare Department)

Business Profile

No. of staff: 140 (including 72 disabled workers)

Business turnover in 2004/05: around $12 million

Established in early 2002 as a subsidiary of the Mental Health Association of Hong Kong (MHAHK).

MentalCare Connect is an established local social enterprise that offers employment opportunities for people with disabilities and the disadvantaged in various business settings so that they can give full play to their potential and shape a better future for themselves.

At present, the scope of business of MentalCare Connect includes convenience stores, rehabilitation products shops, household goods stores, direct sales, cleaning service, etc. By 2004, six “Cheers Gallery” have been set up and operated by MentalCare Connect over the territory.

MentalCare Connect has also employed participants of the Intensive Employment Assistance Projects (IEAPs) organised by MHAHK. Up till now, MHAHK has organised six IEAPs with a total of 670 participants.

The Neighbourhood Advice Action Council

(Sponsored by the “ Enhancing Employment of People with Disabilities through Small Enterprise” Project of the Social Welfare Department )

Business Profile

The Neighbourhood Advice Action Council, established in 1968, is a non-profit making multi-purpose service agency.

No. of people employed by the Council’s social enterprises: 123 (including 43 disabled workers)

In early 2000, the Council started to provide catering services through social enterprises. At present, one-stop home service and club restaurants run in the form of social enterprises are also provided at Dawning Views in Fanling, Metro City in Tseung Kwan O and Grand Panorama in Mid-Levels.

Other services provided by the Council include laundry, Chinese soup express delivery, outside catering, retailing, etc. The scope of business will be further extended following the launch of a central online registration service and a central hotline ordering service by the end of this year.

Wai Ji Hong Yip Co. Ltd.

Wai Ji Hong Yip Co. Ltd., established in 2002, is a subsidiary of Wai Ji Christian Service.

The businesses being run by Wai Ji Hong Yip Co. Ltd include car washing, direct sale and purchasing services, cleaning,collection of recyclables and handicrafts which provide paid job and placement opportunities for the disabled.

New Life Psychiatric Rehabilitation Association

(Sponsored by the "Enhancing Employment of People with Disabilities through Small Enterprise" Project of the Social Welfare Department)

Business Profile

The Association was renamed as New Life Psychiatric Rehabilitation Association (NCPRA) after its reorganisation in 1965 and registered as a limited company under the Companies Ordinance in 1968.

The Association provides service users with “through-train” vocational rehabilitation services and training opportunities for social inclusion, so that they can be engaged in training with pay and acquire positive values from work (including promoting self-respect, self-confidence and self-help) to integrate into the community and become self-reliant.

The simulated businesses operated by NLPRA include the New Life Restaurant, the New Life Healthy Living Specialty Shops, fruit stalls, vegetables stalls and convenience stores.

TWGHs Jockey Club Rehabilitation Complex

Business Profile

TWGHs Jockey Club Rehabilitation Complex (JCRC) was established in November 1997. It embarked on the “Enterprise Vegetable and Fruit Processing and Supply Service” in 2002 and the vegetable and fruit processing and supply businesses involved provide the disabled with opportunities to develop their potential in various functional posts, thus enabling them to become productive members of society.

Currently, clients of JCRC include various TWGHs centres and institutions, other non-governmental organisations and private food premises. Apart from promoting its vegetable and fruit processing and supply services, JCRC also operates vegetable and fruit stalls as well as cooked food stalls.

Since its establishment, JCRC has employed a total of 73 staff among whom 51 are disabled workers, providing able-bodied and disabled persons with equal job opportunities.

A government registered non-profit making company established in 1998 under the Society of Rehabilitation and Crime Prevention, Hong Kong (SRCPHK).

The Company offers training and employment opportunities for rehabilitated offenders and the unemployed to help them build up their self-confidence, enhance their employability and reintegrate into the community, through operation of various services (including moving, transportation, delivery, cleansing of commercial buildings, cleansing after home decoration, etc.).

The Company has provided services for the following government departments and institutions (Labour Department, Trade and Industry Department, Social Welfare Department, Legislative Council, Legal Aid Department, Housing Department, Hong Kong Police Force, Home Affairs Department, Water Supplies Department, Architectural Services Department, Highways Department, Official Receiver’s Office, the Boys’ and Girls’ Clubs Association of Hong Kong, Caritas – Hong Kong, Hong Kong Society for Rehabilitation, Christian and Missionary Alliance, Tung Wah Group of Hospitals, Hong Chi Gateway Club, St. James’ Settlement, Hong Kong Christian Service, Yang Memorial Methodist Social Service, YWCA, etc.).

Bright Services Co. Ltd. also employs participants of the IEAPs organised by SRCPHK or provides placement opportunities for participants.
